In vitro fertilization (IVF) is an assisted reproductive technique for couples having difficulty conceiving, where fertilization occurs outside the body. The procedure involves five main stages that take approximately 4-6 weeks.
Stage 1: Ovulation Induction
The doctor stimulates the ovaries with hormones such as FSH, LH, and hCG for 1-2 weeks to produce multiple mature eggs. Monitoring is done via ultrasound and blood tests to ensure timely ovulation.
Stage 2: Egg Retrieval
The eggs are retrieved using a small needle guided by transvaginal ultrasound (follicular aspiration), usually 36 hours after the ovulation trigger injection. This procedure takes 20-30 minutes under light sedation, and the mature eggs are stored in an incubator.
Stage 3: Sperm Retrieval and Fertilization
Sperm is collected from the man via masturbation or a minor surgical procedure, if necessary. In the lab, the sperm is fertilized with the eggs using conventional techniques or ICSI (direct sperm-to-egg injection), resulting in embryos.
Stage 4: Embryo Culture
The embryos are cultured in an incubator for 3-5 days until they reach the blastocyst stage. The doctor checks their quality and performs genetic testing, if necessary, before selecting the best embryos.
Stage 5: Embryo Transfer
One or two embryos are transferred to the uterus via a thin catheter without anesthesia, approximately 3-5 days after egg retrieval. Pregnancy is confirmed two weeks later via a blood test; any remaining embryos can be frozen.
