3. Secondary Oocytes

The primary oocyte completes the first meiotic division, producing a secondary oocyte and a polar body. The secondary oocyte then begins meiosis II but halts at metaphase II, awaiting fertilization.

4. Fertilization and Ovum Formation

If the secondary oocyte is fertilized by a sperm cell, it completes meiosis II, resulting in a mature ovum and a second polar body. The polar bodies, while byproducts of cell division, do not function as ova and will eventually disintegrate. If fertilization does not occur, the secondary oocyte will degenerate, triggering the next menstrual cycle.
