Functions of Luteinizing Hormone

1. Triggers Ovulation in Women

One of LH’s primary roles in females is to stimulate the release of a mature egg from the ovary during the menstrual cycle.
The “LH surge” occurs mid-cycle and prompts ovulation—the process by which the ovary releases an egg into the fallopian tube. This is a critical step in fertility and the possibility of conception.

2. Supports the Luteal Phase in Women

After ovulation, LH stimulates the formation of the corpus luteum in the ovary. The corpus luteum secretes progesterone, a hormone necessary to maintain the uterine lining for implantation of a fertilized egg and to support early pregnancy if conception occurs.

LH in Men

In males, LH plays a different but equally important role. It stimulates the Leydig cells in the testes to produce testosterone, the primary male sex hormone required for sperm production. Beyond reproduction, testosterone also contributes to the development of male secondary sexual traits, including muscle growth, deepening of the voice, and body hair during puberty.

Balanced LH levels are critical for sustaining healthy testosterone production. Disruptions can lead to low testosterone, potentially resulting in infertility or other sexual health concerns.
