Sperm activation
Sperm activation is a procedure that involves adding a substance to sperm to help improve sperm motility. This is done by increasing the metabolism of the sperm, which produces more energy and triggers sperm movement. Sperm activation is used for patients with the following sperm conditions:
- Necrozoospermia (dead sperm/total number of non-motile sperm)
- Total immotile sperm, either from ejaculate (ejaculation results) or biopsy
Oocyte activation
Oocyte activation is a process that is performed on an egg before fertilization with sperm. Oocyte activation is done for patients with a history of zero fertilization or low fertilization (<30%) after previous intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) cycles. Through oocyte activation, doctors can improve the ability of the egg to develop into an embryo and successfully implant in the uterus to grow and develop.
